Activity for the Last Five Minutes of Class

What do you do when you have some time at the end of class? Please post a successful, short activity that you use to end the class on the right note. It can be a fun activity like a game or competition or an educational activity, but remember you don't have too much time. Don't forget to indicate how much time the activity/game will take.

After you post your idea to this prompt, feel free to post a response to other people's ideas to give them feedback.

  1. Mad Libs. I have two books of Mad Libs that I pull out when I have around 5-7 minutes left of a class period. Sometimes I use this activity as a carrot to get students to behave in class.

What is a Mad Lib? It is a short story or letter in which some words are omitted and students have to insert a humorous word for each absent word in order to make the story strange and funny. It's also a good way to have students practice the different parts of speech. Then when the teacher finishes eliciting words, he or she selects a student to come to the front of class and recite the story with the student-added words. It can be pretty funny!

You can go to the following Internet website to get some of your own printable Mad Libs (called Madglibs at this site): http://www.madglibs.com/

    Try it out!

  3. When my students receive Profiles I always make sure they read it. I dedicate 10 min.to choose a poem or a short story to discuss. It is always intersting to get their response.

  4. Lately I’ve been using a list of commonly misspelled words and having them either write or speak them in a contest manner. Anything that involves competition seems to bring out their worst characteristics, but at least they’re no longer spelling development as developpment, for example.

  5. Honestly: I usually return homework assignments, quizzes, exams, what not, and spend the limited amount of time reviewing sections/questions that were challenging and/or misunderstood by a significant number of students (and then run out the door as quickly as possible to avoid the swarm! ;)

Ideally: In previous years, I have allotted the last 5-10 minutes of class for journaling. Students are required to keep a journal throughout the year and are given a variety of prompts to which they respond (AND a completion/effort grade, of course!) These can be reflections on the day's lesson, quotes, prompts, current events, their own topics, etc. Depending on the nature of the assignment/prompt, students are sometimes asked to switch journals with a partner and write a response to the initial entry in the remaining class time.

DOL (Daily Oral Language) for Middle School and "Word of the Day" activities also work well as productive filler. But I think these activities are better to suited for beginning class.

  6. Oops! Typo on the last line of my entry:
"... better [omit "to"] suited for beginning class."

  7. I'm with Audrey on this. I usually reserve that time for handing back work or reminders about due dates or other "housekeeping" things. Sometimes I will comment on the work I am handing back if it seems important.

If I don't have anything of that sort, I generally keep a file of interesting things printed from the web which relate in one way or another to something in class and read and/or discuss it.

If that fails, I will often ask about something in the news that interests me and initiate an informal conversation on the topic. Casual and fun but it often gives insight into how the students think.

  8. Following Audrey and Chris, I often hand back work, or go over the schedule for the coming weeks with students (to remind them what their homework is, or when to bring their books to class, upcoming quizzes, etc).

For a fun activity, sometimes after discussing reading I have students write a short paragraph relating the book to their own lives or discussing what new ideas it has made them consider. I hope this makes them think more originally about what we're reading, and it's also interesting for me to see what they come up themselves, without my specific prompts or questions, and understand what they find most interesting and thought-provoking about the material.

  9. I like general knowledge a lot, so whenever I have a chance, I ask questions about language, literature, geography, movies, etc.
Here are a few examples: What language did Jesus speak? What poet is referred to in the movie Dangerous Minds? Where is Swat Valley? etc.

  10. Thank you for all these wonderful ideas! Unfortunately, my biggest defect is that I run out of time and almost never overestimate how much time the lesson is going to take. Maybe that's because despite careful planning I always go with the teachable moment, that spontaneous window that you just can't ignore. But I will use all of your suggestions if I ever get the chance to.

Does managing a well-established website such as yours take a massive amount
work? I am completely new to operating a blog but I do write in my diary on a daily basis.
I'd like to start a blog so I will be able to share my experience and views online.
Please let me know if you have any kind of ideas or tips for
    new aspiring bloggers. Thankyou!
